TD Ameritrade Puts Actions Behind Its Patriotic Words

Advisors tend to be patriotic folks, which is clear when they spontaneously give standing ovations at industry conferences for the likes of former presidents, secretaries of state and defense and military leaders.

That was the case at the TD Ameritrade Institutional conference in Orlando on Thursday and Friday, when both former Vice President Dick Cheney and former director of the CIA and Defense Department Secretary Robert Gates received very warm welcomes. During the Q&A session which followed Gates’ talk, several advisors made sure to thank Gates for his long service. In introducing Gates on Thursday morning, Zohar Swaine, TDAI’s managing director of strategy and a Marine Corps veteran of the first Gulf War, introduced Gates as a DoD Secretary who cared deeply for the troops under his purview.

But at this year’s TD conference, the company went beyond paying lip service to honoring veterans by forming a partnership with the central Florida chapter of the American Red Cross. TD paid for the supplies to make up 2,000 kits for wounded returning troops and for homeless vets in that part of Florida where the conference was being held.

Several TD executives, including its DC advocacy director, Skip Schweiss (left), invited attendees to take a few minutes to help put together the kits with Red Cross volunteers, with Schweiss noting that a very high percentage of the homeless in the U.S. are veterans. As of Friday morning, Schweiss said 1,300 kits had been put together by advisor attendees. One advisor, a TDAI media relations spokesman said, alone made up 150 of the kits.
