The Top 10 Most Profitable Mega-Cap Stocks

With the stock market in correction mode, investors are looking to put their money into relatively stable companies, like mega-cap stocks.

Why? Mega-cap stocks have been around for many years and have survived several economic downturns, which is why investors flock to these stocks during times of economic uncertainty.

But which mega-cap stock is best for your portfolio? One way to get a closer look at the segment is to determine how profitable the companies are compared to their industry. Learn more below.

Profitability
To analyze the profitability of these stocks, we compared the companies' gross, operating, and profit margins with their industry averages to find those more profitable than their peers.

Trailing-12-month gross margin: This metric that tells us the percentage of its revenue a company retains after paying all production expenses. Costs include overhead, payroll, and taxation.

Gross margin % = ((revenue - cost of goods sold) / revenue)) X 100

TTM operating margin: This tells us the percentage remaining after all operating expenses are paid. Operating expenses include supplies, repairs, research and development, and depreciation.

Operating margin % = (operating income / net operating revenue) X 100

TTM pre-tax margin: A company's earnings before taxes. This incorporates all of the expenses associated with business, excluding taxes. It can help to determine the overall operating efficiency of the firm. The higher the pre-tax margin, the more profitable the company is.

Pre-tax margin % = (net profit before taxes / net sales) X 100
