Amazon: Kindle Sales Jump; No Numbers, Please (Correction)

In the latest missive from Amazon (AMZN) completely lacking in informative quantitative detail, the company said its sales of the latest models of Kindle ebook reader since their introduction on July 28thhave surpassed total sales of the Kindle devices in the entire fourth quarter of last year.

Amazon did not provide actual unit sales for the Kindle, as it has not in previous announcements regarding the Kindle. I would note that the company made a similar statement about the devices being “the fastest selling ever” back in August, four weeks after the new Kindles went on sale.

The company said its sales of ebooks continue to outpace sales of printed books, and that the sales growth of ebooks at Amazon from January through August of this year has been faster than the industry rise of 193% in ebooks, citing Association of American Publishers data.

Amazon customers have purchased ebooks instead of print versions for the 10 bestselling titles on Amazon by a ratio of greater than 2 to 1, the company said.

Amazon shares are up $1.65, or almost 1%, at $170.78.

Correction: A previous version of this post erroneously cited Amazon’s Kindle sales data as being for October, when in fact the reported sales of new Kindle models were since the launch date in July. My apologies for the error.
