Top 10 Promising Companies To Own For 2015

Although we don't believe in timing the market or panicking over market movements, we do like to keep an eye on big changes -- just in case they're material to our investing thesis.

What: Shares of Astronics Corporation (NASDAQ: ATRO  ) were headed for the stars today, gaining 11% after a strong quarterly earnings report.

So what: The aerospace supplier said that sales increased 13.6% to $74 million, a new company record, and came in 3% ahead of estimates. Adjusted earnings per share also beat the Street's view, coming in at $0.49 vs. an estimated per-share profit of $0.43. The company's backlog was also slightly higher than in the previous quarter, and CEO Peter Gundermann said Astronics was tracking toward the high end of its previous guidance and will update its outlook in the second quarter. The revenue forecast remains at $280 million to $310 million, with nearly all of that coming from the aerospace segment.

Now what: For a modest earnings beat, the 10% jump may seem a little exaggerated, but the pieces seem to be coming together for Astronics to have a stellar 2013. Gundermann noted that sales were "strong across the majority of our markets and product lines." Combine that prospect with the promising guidance, which would seem to indicate that the second quarter has gotten off to a good start, and I wouldn't be surprised to see Astronics bump up its guidance in its next report. See what happens next by adding the company to your Watchlist here.

Advisors' Opinion:

Chinese manufacturing and materials stocks may not be the only picks in trouble, however. Leading international manufacturers could see demand in the world's second-largest economy, cutting into lofty growth expectations that relied upon China's surge to make up for weakness elsewhere around the globe. Japanese industrial power Komatsu (NASDAQOTH: KMTUY  ) , the second-largest industrial machinery manufacturer in the world, is betting ongrowing Chinese demand this fiscal year, in combination with the weak yen, to fuel growth.

  • [By Dan Carroll]

An up-and-down yen spurs an up-and-down market
Abe brought about stimulus in response to one of Japan's worst economic problems of the last half-century: more than two decades of a stagnant economy and deflation. Weakening the yen against other leading currencies would be a boon for leading Japanese exporters looking for an edge against overseas competition. Manufacturers such as Komatsu (NASDAQOTH: KMTUY  ) have applauded the moves as they look to use a weak yen to grow profits. Komatsu alone projected 46% full-year profit growth this year thanks to the weak yen.

  • [By Nicole Seghetti]

    Dumped
Japanese industrial manufacturer Komatsu (NASDAQOTH: KMTUY  ) recently picked up market share in China by outcompeting rival Caterpillar on price. But Fisher probably dumped Komatsu stock based partly on the company's shrinking profits resulting from falling demand in Asian nations such as China and Indonesia.

  • [By Dan Carroll]

That doesn't mean you should rush headfirst into any old Japanese stock on the hopes of a nationwide surge; as with all investing, picking the best stocks is the way to go. The country's top exporters have seen their stock rise and fall with the yen's volatility, but leading manufacturers such as Kubota (NASDAQOTH: KUBTY  ) and Komatsu (NASDAQOTH: KMTUY  ) are poised to ride a weaker yen higher to better compete against foreign rivals.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By John Udovich]

Small cap display stock SGOCO Group Ltd (NASDAQ: SGOC) just sank 27.89% after reporting earnings, meaning its worth taking a closer look at it along with some other innovative display stocks likeCorning Incorporated (NYSE: GLW) and Universal Display Corporation (NASDAQ: OLED). After all, just about every new consumer gadget along with cars and even appliances are incorporating display technology. I should also mention that we have had Corning Incorporated in our SmallCap Network Elite Opportunity (SCN EO) portfolio since early December (we are up around 29.20%) as we believe the company is in the sweet spot for next generation flexible screens and mobile wearables.

  • [By John Udovich]

Small cap flat panel display stockUniversal Display Corporation (NASDAQ: OLED) was hit by bearish news in late November and the trend lines on its technicalcharts appear to be confused as to what direction the stock will head, meaning its probably time to take a closer look at the situation along with the stock performance verses that of flat panel display peers like large cap Corning Incorporated (NYSE: GLW)and small cap players like Daktronics, Inc (NASDAQ: DAKT) and SGOCO Group Ltd (NASDAQ: SGOC)

  • [By Roberto Pedone]

SGOCO Group (SGOC) engages in designing and developing LCD/LED monitors, TVs and other application-specific products for sale primarily to the flat-panel display market in China. This stock closed up 8.8% to $2.58 in Tuesday's trading session.

    Tuesday's Range: $2.26-$2.59

    52-Week Range: $0.70-$3.40

    Tuesday's Volume: 146,000

    Three-Month Average Volume: 522,556

From a technical perspective, SGOC bounced sharply higher here right off some near-term support at $2.25 with lighter-than-average volume. This stock has been uptrending strong for the last month and change, with shares moving higher from its low of $1.51 to its recent high of $3.10. During that move, shares of SGOC have been making mostly higher lows and higher highs, which is bullish technical price action. That move has now pushed shares of SGOC within range of triggering a major breakout trade. That trade will hit if SGOC manages to take out some near-term overhead resistance levels at $3.10 to its 52-week high at $3.40.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in SGOC as long as it's trending above $2.25 or its 50-day at $1.92 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that's near or above 522,556 shares. If that breakout hits soon, then SGOC will set up to enter new 52-week-high territory, which is bullish technical price action. Some possible upside targets off that breakout are $4 to $4.50.

Large cap glass and ceramics technology stock Corning Incorporated (NYSE: GLW) has put in a good performance since announcing a deal with Samsung back in October, meaning its probably time to take a closer look at the stock along with the performance ofpotential peers (either upstream or downstream on the OLED and liquid crystal display side of the glass business) likesmall cap players like Daktronics, Inc (NASDAQ: DAKT), SGOCO Group Ltd (NASDAQ: SGOC) and Universal Display Corporation (NASDAQ: OLED). I should note that we have recently added Corning Incorporated to our SmallCap Network Elite Opportunity (SCN EO) portfolio because we believe thecompany position as it relates toglass and ceramics puts it ina sweet spotfor thenext generation flexible screens and mobile wearables. But that not all there is to like about this stock.

Advisors' Opinion:

Synopsis: As a result of the terms of its bankruptcy and the proposed merger with U.S. Airways (LCC), an equity investment in AMR Corp (AAMRQ.PK) is equivalent to a series of derivatives on LCC. At current market values, AAMRQ is undervalued by approximately 40%. It is possible to create an arbitrage position that should capture this pricing differential over the next 6 months.

Last but not the least is US Airways Group (LCC), in which Y/Cap slightly increased its position, now owning around $7.9 million. U.S. Airways is currently on the minds of many investors, mainly due to its plans to merge with American Airlines parent AMR Corp (AAMRQ.PK). While European regulators approved the merger, the U.S. Department of Justice put a spoke in the wheel, and is trying to block the move. The companies filed a motion to the court to set the trial date for November 12. Amid these actions, U.S. Airways and American Airlines prolonged the outside date at which one of the companies can terminate the proposed merger.
