Top 10 Internet Companies To Invest In 2015

The media hype is starting: Rumors abound that Facebook will soon announce plans to sell shares to the public. Whispers set a $100 billion price tag as a possible valuation for the social media giant; it would be the largest internet initial public offering (IPO) ever, and the fourth largest IPO of any type.

Interest is intense; after all nearly 800 million users spend hours daily on the site, trading pictures, political banter, recipes, reconnecting with old friends and searching for new ones. No website has captured the imagination and time of so many across the globe.

Pundits say we can only imagine the advertising, data mining, and related revenue that could be generated. The value of networks, it's said, rises exponentially with their size. Facebook is a unique property and represents a unique opportunity for investors. But, does it merit your investment dollars?

Bottom Line

Steer clear of this IPO. Profitable investing requires focus on the financial metrics. Tallies of clicks, unique users, and time spent on a website is of little value and can't be analyzed except by the revenues and profits generated. The rumored price tag puts the shares in bubble land, where the downside risks far outweigh any upside hopes.

Advisors' Opinion:

InterActiveCorp (IACI) bought Ask.com for $1.85 billion in 2005. The new Perion will be worth only about 40% of that. After the merger, Perion will leapfrog its much larger rivals: Babylon and AVG (AVG). Finally, Perion should be able to increase its operating margins as it can spread its SG&A costs over a much larger base (Conduit EBITDA margin is 32% vs. Perion's 23%). Perion will keep its senior management team intact: Josef Mandelbaum will remain its CEO and Yacov Kaufman its CFO. Perion has successfully orchestrated a roll-up acquisitions of privately-held Sweetpacks and Smilebox, so I have high confidence that they know how to integrate a new business.

AP/Jim Mone Is Bitcoin a slam-dunk as the currency of the future? The Sacramento Kings seem to think so. The NBA team recently became the first pro sports franchise to accept Bitcoin as a form of payment. Basketball fans will be able not only to purchase tickets and merchandise online with the digital cryptocurrency, but also to use it to buy souvenirs at the arena come game time. The team is the latest in a growing number of commercial entities finding a slot in their virtual cash registers for Bitcoin. Little by little, momentum is building for a widespread acceptance of the upstart currency. Overstocking The Kings' drive towards the Bitcoin basket comes a week after the big online retailer Overstock.com (OSTK) announced it would start accepting payments in the currency. The move was an instant hit -- the first day the company had the nifty Bitcoin button as an option in its shopping cart, its customers used it to make more than 800 transactions for total sales of around $130,000. Overstock.com was by no means the first online marketplace to accept the currency. Numerous web retailers have been doing so for some time. It's a natural fit, %VIRTUAL-article-sponsoredlinks in a way, since Bitcoin exists solely in the digital realm. Customers booking flights on discount travel operator CheapAir.com, for example, can use Bitcoin to buy their tickets, as can love seekers on dating site OkCupid, owned by IAC/InteractiveCorp (IACI). These digital players are going to have plenty of company. Earlier this month, online games purveyor Zynga (ZNGA) started to dip its toes in the water, announcing that it was testing Bitcoin payments for some of its titles in conjunction with specialist transaction facilitator BitPay. But if Overstock.com didn't get there first, it's still the largest and most prominent e-retailer to take the Bitcoin plunge thus far. This is a big win for the currency and its advocates, and Overstock.com will surely be followed by more well-known comp

Google has two advantages over most media as a means to deliver a marketing message. The first is its size. Based on comScore data for October, Google siteshad 194.1 million unique visitors in the United States. And this is only traffic to desktop computers. The search company’s reach sits second to Yahoo! Inc. (NASDAQ: YHOO) sitesby thiscomScoreyardstick. Yahoo! had 195.8 million unique visitors in October.

Advisors' Opinion:

The market is still pretty extended, and most stocksvaluations have stretched even further. Everybody still loves the Mo-Mo stocks like Amazon (AMZN) and Netflix (NFLX). Bargains are as thin as they were Tuesday afternoon. The market focus remains on global central banks, and the prospects for a continued flow of cheap money continue to drive global asset values higher. It remains a very challenging environment for a deep value investor.

AFP/Getty Images/Frederic J. Brown Over the past decade or so, waves of computer-aided identity theft have washed over the U.S. Since the first big hack attack on ChoicePoint in 2005, through more recent data breaches at Evernote, LivingSocial, and now the massive Target (TGT) breach involving 110 million pieces of data (just the third-largest data breach in U.S. history, by the way), companies have more or less figured out a routine for dealing with data breaches. You notify the FBI. You (eventually) notify your customers. And you replace everybody's credit cards. With the latest breach at Target, that process is already well under way. Megabanks like JP Morgan Chase (JPM), Bank of America (BAC), Wells Fargo (WFC), and Citigroup (C) have collectively handed out millions of new cards, with new card numbers, to customers whose data may have been compromised by the Target data breach. Last week, the Independent Community Bankers of America issued a release confirming its members -- small banks around the country -- have "reissued more than 4 million credit and debit cards." To ensure that credit and debit card numbers that hacker stole from Target and Neiman Marcus will soon be useless, ICBA member bankers absorbed costs in excess of $40 million. And as a result of their quick action, says the group, "community banks' initial fraud costs were relatively low, with less than 1 percent of community bank customers reporting fraud." So, while the Target breach and the "110 million pieces of data lost" sounds bad, the damage probably won't be as bad as you think. In fact, you can use this epic data fail to your advantage. You Have to Set up New Auto-Payments When your bank sends you a new credit or debit card, it will come with a new number to replace the one that Target lost. Your old number has been canceled. This means any automatic payment plans you've set up -- your subscriptions and the card numbers that you have preselected for payments on Amazon (AMZN), P

Consumer interest in sporting goods has been steadily increasing in recent years, as the "fit culture" becomes a way of life for millions of desk jockeys. The global sporting goods industry is projected to reach sales of $303 billion by 2015, and the U.S. is by far the world's leading consumer of these products. However, Dick's must still contend with Amazon.com (NASDAQ: AMZN  ) , which has a few dozen legs up in the e-commerce space. Just last quarter, Dick's management recognized the need to build out the company's e-commerce business, which accounted for 5.8% of the company's total sales, compared with just 3.7% a year ago. Dick's will aggressively invest in e-commerce space as the company expands its reach. At the same time, sporting goods remains one of the few retail niches that can still thrive on a bricks-and-mortar model. Until Amazon has same-day delivery for everything, all the time, there will still be something appealing in actually trying on your running shoes before you buy them.

    How dangerous?
Cyber attacks on websites, particularly the DDoS-type of disruption, first began in 2001. Back then, sites like eBay (NASDAQ: EBAY  ) and Yahoo! (NASDAQ: YHOO  ) were targeted, possibly in an attempt to disrupt e-commerce. Since then, groups like Izz ad-Din-as-Qassam or groups tied to the Iranian government have staged assaults on the websites of big banks likeBank of America (NYSE: BAC  ) , Wells Fargo (NYSE: WFC  ) , and Citgroup (NYSE: C  ) , as well as large regionals such as BB&T (NYSE: BBT  ) and PNC Financial.

The stock has moved higher in recent years, but is currently pulling back. Over the last four quarters, earnings and revenues have been rising, which has left investors pleased. Relative to its peers and sector, eBay has been a relative year-to-date performance leader. Look for Ebay to OUTPERFORM.
