Hewlett-Packard Launches New Power-Efficient Servers

PC giant Hewlett-Packard (NYSE: HPQ  ) today announced a new lineup of Moonshot servers, boasting that they offer incredible power efficiency, consuming up to 89% less energy and occupying 80% less space, which should translate into costing 77% less.

HP believes that traditional data center infrastructure is reaching a "breaking point" in terms of space, power, and cost constraints, and that its Moonshot servers can create a more sustainable approach. On the most recent conference call, CEO Meg Whitman said that Moonshot was more than "evolutionary innovation," but was "disruptive innovation" and could "truly be a revolution."

Moonshot systems are now available in the U.S. and Canada, and HP will rollout to Europe, Asia, and Latin America beginning in May.

The new HP Moonshot system is the second-generation server from HP's Project Moonshot. The new class of server is engineered to address the IT challenges created by social, cloud, mobile, and big data.
