Pandit's abrupt exit: First responses

This morning, Citigroup C CEO Vikram Pandit announced his resignation effective immediately, shocking Wall Street. First responses from some smart observers:

WSJ reporters: It was a clash with the board over strategy and performance.

Felix Salmon, Reuters: "The CEO's job is to run the bank, to answer to the board, and to get fired if he doesn't perform. Which is what seems to have happened with Pandit."

Jim Cramer freaked out: "I don't know what the heck is going on here. The company just reported a terrific quarter!"

Henry Blodget: Did he jump or was he pushed? And why now?

Sheila Bair: "This is a very positive move."

Stephen Gandel, Fortune: Was it because of housing?

Josh Brown: "You can't be half a gangster"

Ritchie King, Quartz: Citi stock was down about 90% during the Pandit era.
