Toyota Motor Whiffs on Earnings

Toyota Motor (NYSE: TM  ) reported earnings on Feb. 5. Here are the numbers you need to know.

For the quarter ended Dec. 31 (Q3), Toyota Motor beat expectations on revenues and whiffed on earnings per share.

Compared to the prior-year quarter, revenue shrank slightly and GAAP earnings per share grew.

Gross margins dropped, operating margins shrank, net margins grew.

Revenue details
Toyota Motor logged revenue of $61.49 billion. The 11 analysts polled by S&P Capital IQ looked for sales of $59.91 billion on the same basis. GAAP reported sales were 2.8% lower than the prior-year quarter's $63.23 billion.

EPS details
EPS came in at $0.68. The two earnings estimates compiled by S&P Capital IQ predicted $1.32 per share. GAAP EPS of $0.36 for Q3 were 5.9% higher than the prior-year quarter's $0.34 per share.

Margin details
For the quarter, gross margin was 13.6%, 160 basis points worse than the prior-year quarter. Operating margin was 2.3%, 340 basis points worse than the prior-year quarter. Net margin was 1.9%, 20 basis points better than the prior-year quarter.

Looking ahead
Next quarter's average estimate for revenue is $61.62 billion. On the bottom line, the average EPS estimate is $1.33.

Next year's average estimate for revenue is $235.29 billion. The average EPS estimate is $6.98.
